Currency and Banking Operations

The Currency and Banking Operations Group is the operational backbone of CBS, overseeing critical functions such as currency issuance, reserve management, and banking services. Guided by Executive Director Ahmed Bashir Hundubey, this group ensures the smooth functioning of Somalia’s financial infrastructure and supports the government’s fiscal operations through three departments: Financial Markets, Banking Operations, and Currency.

The Financial Markets Department manages Somalia’s financial reserves, liquidity, and public debt. Its Market Operation Division stabilizes the financial system through open market operations, while the Reserves Management Division oversees national reserves to ensure economic security. The Debt Management Division formulates sustainable public debt strategies, and the Foreign Accounts Division handles international financial transactions. The Banking Operations Department facilitates CBS’s role as fiscal agent, with the Accounts Division managing institutional accounts, the Treasury Division overseeing fund transfers, and the Banking Services Division providing secure financial services. The Payment Systems Division ensures the functionality of national payment platforms, and the Branches Division manages CBS’s regional operations. The Currency Department oversees the issuance and secure distribution of the Somali Shilling through its Currency Planning & Printing Division, responsible for designing and printing currency, and the Currency Storage & Issuance Division, which manages currency storage and distribution. Together, these departments and divisions ensure the stability, inclusivity, and reliability of Somalia’s financial system.
